Description
Introduction:
Dentists are obliged to undergo regular and appropriate radiation protection training to increase their awareness and understanding of relevant national legislation.
Training should provide up to date information on current legislation and statutory guidance for the tasks performed by dentists to ensure their safety and that of their patients, colleagues, and members of the public.
This mandated training is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Health Information & Quality Authority (HIQA), the Dental Council, and the Health & Safety Authority (HSA). A record of attendance at this core CPD subject should be maintained for at least 5 years.

This course is designed for dentists and other persons who may act in the roles of undertaking, referrers, and practitioners for ionising radiation.

Course Aim: To review the National and European legislation governing the use of ionising radiation in dentistry as it effects undertakings and dentists (referrers and practitioners).
Course Objectives:
- Examine statutory controls, legal aspects, and organisational framework of radiation protection as they apply to dentists;
- Review the dentist’s basic first principles for radiation protection systems;
- Review authorised roles and responsibilities for dentists;
- Consider the implementation of the legislation in dentistry;
- Identify key requirements for the safety and protection of patients, work colleagues, and the public.
