Description

Introduction:

Dentists are required to provide patients with information relating to the benefits and risks associated with radiation dose from medical exposures prior to the procedure being carried out.

This obligation is set out in S.I. 256 (2018) Regulation 8: Justification of Medical Exposures.

Compliance with this regulation is assessed by the Health Information & Quality Authority (HIQA). Additional guidance is provided by the Dental Council in the Code of Practice relating to: Professional Behaviour and Ethical Conduct.

A record of attendance at this core CPD subject should be maintained for at least 5 years.


Who Should Attend:

This course is intended for dentists and dental team members who take x-rays. It is designed to support these persons in fulfilling their obligation to ensure the patient has awareness and understanding of the risks and benefits of a medical exposure, in advance of that procedure being carried out.

This may include:

  • Dentists
  • Dental Team members who take x-rays
  • Radiation Protection Officers (RPOs)
  • Practice Owners
  • Practice Manager

Course Aim: To review the main issues when providing radiation information to patients on the risks and benefits of a dental x-ray

Course Objectives:

  1. Consider the legal background and professional obligations underpinning the consent process for children and adults
  2. List factors which contribute to communicating sensitive and scientific information to patients including the pregnancy question
  3. Manage situations when a patient/parent raises questions or takes issue with a prescribed procedure
